The complete 2026 ADA guide to mental health workplace accommodations — which conditions qualify, how to request accommodations, and what employers must provide.
The Americans with Disabilities Act protects employees with mental health conditions — but most people never use the accommodations they’re entitled to, simply because the process feels opaque.
Conditions that qualify
Anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, ADHD, and most other diagnosed conditions qualify when they substantially limit a major life activity. A formal diagnosis documented in your medical records is the starting point.
Requesting an accommodation
You don’t need to share your full diagnosis with your employer. A letter from your provider describing functional limitations and the requested accommodation is usually enough to start the interactive process.
